2016 BMW 4 Series 440i reviewed by WhatCar?18/08/2016
“Not only is it rapid enough to put a massive smile on your face, it also makes a fabulous noise”
The BMW 440i is a thrill to drive and makes the perfect alternative “if you don’t want something quite so focussed” as the BMW M4, but want something more powerful than the popular BMW 435i.
The engine is one of the most notable features of the BMW 440i, with an extra 20bhp over its predecessor not only giving it more power but actually “improv[ing] fuel economy and emissions” through its stop-start technology and automatic eight-speed gearbox which “always ensures the engine isn’t spinning too hard”. The gearbox “works brilliantly with the engine to execute smooth gearchanges” and the sound of the engine maintains a “pleasing, old-school tune” as the speed picks up; which is something that “BMW should be commended for”.
The model is not only commendable for its engine, however, as its control at keeping the car steady when going round corners is also extremely impressive, proving “resistant to body lean, keen to change direction and very well balanced”; which is even further enhanced by the Sport and Sport Plus modes.
Inside the BMW 440i the sophisticated look is very similar to previous BMW 4 series models, having a very “high quality” aesthetic and “plenty of room” in both the front and rear, along with BMW’s iDrive infotainment system which is “one of the best set-ups on the market”.
The BMW 440i is more affordable than the BMW M4 whilst still offering “more than enough pace for most people”.
